About

This course is designed to support students' individual literacy development and support their work across core courses in the 9th and 10th grade

Literacy development is accomplished by ensuring a high volume of just-right reading practice of texts students can and want to read, along with individualized direct instruction on specific areas of difficulty. Independent reading practice solidifies skills and strategies and expands exposure to text, which, in turn, supports all components of reading.  Individual instruction in the form of frequent conferences with 1:1 mini-lessons will be used to identify and address reading difficulty and specific skill development.

In addition to ensuring a high volume of practice with individualized instruction, this course supports students' literacy efforts across courses.  Each semester, this course will focus on the texts, tasks and strategies associated with one major project per class (science, social studies and English).  Instead of merely providing extra supervised time for these projects, strategy instruction and scaffolded activities will support students' development of the skills, strategies and approaches to engage with complex performance tasks that set them up for success in each of their classes
